The Magic of "The Wizard of Oz" Comes Alive at LCIS

Our Middle School students put on an enchanting production of the classic “The Wizard of Oz” on 9-10 April. An excited audience packed into Dingman Hall on both nights to enjoy the immense talents of our Grades 6-10 students.

The role of Dorothy, played by Katelyn Beukes (Grade 7), was a standout, with Katelyn noting, “This production of The Wizard of Oz has completely changed my perspective on musical production.” She went on to say: “I can see how much the cast, crew, staff and maintenance have worked to make this story a reality. I am so delighted that I have had the privilege to see this musical come together and to form new bonds during these few months. I highly recommend participating in something like this, as it was such a wonderful experience."

Elise Klein (Grade 7), who played the Scarecrow, was overjoyed by the camaraderie and bonding that took place during the preparation process. She said, “One of the most magical and one of my most favourite parts of this theatre programme is how easily bonds are made by connecting with our love of theatre.”

The actors weren’t the only ones to enjoy the theatrical production experience. The tech crew, affectionately referring to themselves as the ‘Tech Republic’, worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help bring this iconic story to life. Tech crew and stage hand Torin Sands (Grade 9) said, "Most of the time, making something can be chaotic and stressful, but when you see it finally finished, it's amazing."

With its heartfelt performances and creative spirit, this rendition of "The Wizard of Oz" will be remembered by students and families alike, illustrating the power of teamwork and imagination in the arts. "We couldn’t be prouder of our incredible middle school cast and crew for bringing The Wizard of Oz to life,” said Director John Kinghorn (Head of Performing Arts). “From student-led tech, side stage and makeup to outstanding performances onstage, this production was a true celebration of collaboration, creativity, and courage. Congratulations to everyone involved!"
