LCIS Student-Athletes Prepare for Regional and International Competitions

Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) continues to expand opportunities for its student-athletes to compete at a high level, with a series of upcoming competitions that will challenge its teams, strengthen school spirit and provide valuable experience competing against opponents from across the Caribbean and the United States.

From the school’s first volleyball tournament against a team from the United States, to hosting its annual KPMG Football Fest U15 tournament, and travelling to Florida to compete in boys’ and girls’ soccer, LCIS athletes are preparing to represent their school and country on a bigger stage.

LCIS Volleyball Takes on The Hudson School

LCIS will face The Hudson School from Hoboken, New Jersey, in a co-educational volleyball match on Saturday 24 October, at 9.00am at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. The match will feature boys and girls teams spanning Grades 6–12. The game marks the school’s first international volleyball match.

Players have been preparing through regular training sessions every Tuesday and Thursday, and Athletic Director Scot Ruggles said the match would give students the opportunity to showcase their hard work and experience the excitement of representing LCIS.

Both the Boys’ and Girls’ Senior Teams have previously claimed the BAISS Volleyball Championship titles. Both teams will be looking to build on their past success and once again demonstrate the skill, determination and team spirit that define LCIS athletics.

LCIS to Host 14th Annual KPMG Football Fest U15

On 6 and 7 November, LCIS will host the 14th annual KPMG Football Fest U15 tournament, welcoming more than 150 athletes from schools across the Caribbean.

The tournament will officially open with a ceremony at 8.15am on Friday 6 November, before teams compete for the Bowl, Plate, Shield and Championship titles. Saturday’s programme will feature semi-finals and finals across the four divisions.

LCIS will be represented by 36 students across four teams: two boys’ teams and two girls’ teams. Established by former LCIS Athletic Director Craig Massey, the tournament has become an annual regional sporting event. Both LCIS boys’ and girls’ teams have won their respective divisions in previous years, and the school aims to claim both titles this year.

LCIS Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Teams Head to Florida

From 17–20 November, LCIS boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will travel to Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for matches against Miami Country Day School and The Posnack School.

The trip will give LCIS student-athletes the opportunity to compete against schools whose teams train throughout the year, providing valuable exposure to different levels of competition.

According to Mr Ruggles, preparing for the trip has already brought changes to the school’s athletic programme, allowing teams to begin training and weightlifting earlier in the academic year than ever before.

The experience will also give students the opportunity to represent not only LCIS but The Bahamas, making the trip a significant milestone for the school’s soccer programme.

Building Skills, Teamwork and School Spirit

For LCIS, these competitions represent more than opportunities to win. They reflect a wider commitment to ensuring student-athletes can compete locally and internationally while developing skills and character that extend beyond the playing field.

Mr Ruggles emphasised the importance of the experiences students gain through training and travelling together, noting that the time spent preparing and competing as a team helps build lasting bonds among teammates.

“Our goal at LCIS is to give our student-athletes the chance to compete not only on island but all over the world at the highest levels,” said Mr Ruggles.

He added: “Our athletic department appreciates the parents and our school leadership for giving our student-athletes these amazing opportunities. Our students and coaches have worked extremely hard in preparation for these events and this trip. Go Dragons!”

Through these upcoming competitions, LCIS continues to invest in opportunities that challenge its athletes, strengthen its sporting programmes and encourage students to represent their school and country with pride.

Athletics is one of the three pillars that constitute the LCIS identity. The school is committed to developing the pursuit of excellence in Academics, the Arts, and Athletics. The school also focuses on fostering a global perspective in students, while celebrating its strong history in The Bahamas.
